1. While listening to the stories of these teenagers, what common themes emerged
in terms of their emotional states? Identify at least two themes.
2. These teenagers very clearly articulated their reasons for doing drugs, which
was mostly to self-medicate. How do you address the fact that for some
individuals, as these teenagers said, using drugs makes them feel so much better.
When a teenager says that the drugs make their anxiety, depression, etc. go
away, how can you help them see that drugs are not the answer? As we know,
teenagers are not always receptive to adults telling them not to do something.
3. What do you think about the approach and perspective of the therapist in this
video, Janice Gabe? Do you agree or disagree with what she is saying about
treating adolescents with co-occurring disorders? Identify one point about her
treatment approach that you particularly liked or disliked.
