Prepare: In preparation for this discussion forum, make a list of what you learned most throughout the process of researching your final essay topic, as well as difficulties you may have encountered along the way. |
Reflect: Think about what you have learned in the development of your research findings on the global societal issue you chose in the Week 1 discussion forum, your proposed solution and its ethical outcomes, and share with your classmates why this specific issues requires further research. |
Write: For this discussion, you will address the following prompts:
Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length, which should include a thorough response to each prompt. You are required to provide in-text citations of applicable required reading materials and/or any other outside sources you use to support your claims. Provide full reference entries of all sources cited at the end of your response. Please use correct APA format when writing in-text citations (see In-Text Citation Helper (Links to an external site.)) and references (see Formatting Your References List (Links to an external site.)). |

Week 3- Discussion 1 · Identify the global societal issue you have chosen to research for your Final Paper, an argumentative essay, and explain why further research on this topic is essential. For my global societal issue paper, I have decided to research pollution and its effects on the pediatric population. My major is in Early Childhood education, so I wanted to explore something impacting my primary interest. With further research on this topic, families will be more aware of the effects on their children regarding air pollution and how important it is to stay inside during high air pollution days. Plus, be mindful of what they can do to reduce pollution, no matter how small the contribution is.· Provide a clear and concise thesis statement that includes a solution to the global societal issue (see Writing a Thesis Statement (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.) for assistance). Air pollution in the child development process has lifelong effects on a child’s cognitive development for years to come; with the growing population and pollution increasing, families should be more aware of pollution’s effects on their children. With awareness, families can help contribute to the cure of air pollution in pediatrics. · Explain how this global societal issue impacts a specific population. The specific population I wish to address is early childhood. Because children’s brains are developing during early childhood, pollution has an alarming effect on the brain. When children inhale the polluted air, it travels to the brain, creating issues with cognitive development. “Animal studies have shown that inhaled particles can be translocated from the respiratory system directly to the central nervous system, providing evidence that the brain is a target for airborne particulate matter” (para. 2). With studies on pollution and the effects on children’s cognitive development, more and more families should be aware of the possible impacts on children and how awareness can help with this global societal issue.· Locate a peer-reviewed scholarly source and provide statistical data that you found surprising on the topic. This article ran a couple of experiments and investigated the products in both rural and urban areas. I found this article interesting because the results showed that urban and rural environments affected the subjects. Of course, the rural setting was much less but still having a minor impact on the brain development of the subjects in the experiment.
