Qualitative Observation Tools- Running Records

A running record is when you write down everything of importance that is being observed as it is happening. The idea is to record as much raw data as possible while using descriptive language and to write down everything that is happening in the order that it happens (McGraw-Hill, n.d.). Although running records can be exhausting and time consuming, it provides a lot of information in great detail.

I will be using this tool to observe physical development. This is because of the age of the child I will be observing and being eight years old she is very active and learning a lot of new physical skills.

The purpose for using running records to assess my chosen domain is simply that I feel this tool will work best for me. I can be very forgetful and I believe when it comes to data it would work best for me to write everything down right away and as it is happening.

Quantitative Observation Tools- Event Sampling

Event sampling is done by counting or tallying every instance of a target behavior that is observed (Howard & Aiken, 2015). With this it is important to observe and record behaviors at the same part of each day because this will ensure the data to be comparable from one observation to the next and this will show patterns on how behavior can change over time.

I will be using this tool to observe physical development. This is because of the age of the child I will be observing and I want to see how active she is and how she behaves at a given part of each day.

The purpose for using event sampling to assess my chosen domain is to see what her behavior is like at a given time each day. I want to see how it is similar and different to the previous days and determine what could make it so.

In order to eliminate bias from my observation, I need to be aware of my own biases. For example, I am observing my daughter. So I need to be aware of the fact that I cannot create any bias because she is my daughter. The three strategies I will use to eliminate bias are:

1.Understanding one’s own prejudices.

2.Being aware of the benefits of antibiased teaching.

3.Comparing children’s behavior objectively to other children.
