“Facilitating spiritual care for patients with worldviews different from mine is not difficult for me because from my travels around the world, I have been exposed to different cultures, moral values, belief system, age, activities of daily living, and these exposure has given me knowledge and understanding of human nature as a whole. The human needs are the same worldwide; culture, traditions and belief system influence these needs. I believe I have a God given gift of tolerance which has kept me in this profession because I do not believe in dispute or grudge, my ideology is being open minded free of prejudice, finding out the differences and addressing them accordingly, and I am well known for that at work, so they nicknamed me the “Diplomat” always trying to solve conflicts and differences.

Addressing patients with different worldview than mine would be to use open-ended questions to identify patient’s views about illness and health, affirming what the patient has verbalized to me, reflecting on the information with the patient and summarizing all the information collected to formulate patient’s identified outcome while creating a therapeutic environment. According to Shelly & Miller (2006), “when patients or family members come from other religious traditions, or no religion, they may refuse any offer of spiritual intervention. Some may request spiritual care from a representative of their own belief system. In such cases we must respect their preferences. Sometimes that opposition comes when spiritual care is inappropriately offered”.

Putting myself in the patient’s position, the person that would have the final say in terms of ethical decision-making and intervention in the event of a grim condition depends on if I am mentally stable and able to make decisions for myself or if I am knowledgeable enough of the condition. From my Christian worldview, we are all made in God’s image and must live according to the scripture finding our life’s purpose. We have to walk the Lord’s path by loving our neighbors as ourselves, being kind to one another, caring, giving, sharing and reflect these qualities of our Creator. God has equipped every one of us with these qualities; it is for us to live by it according to his word. Christian foundation has shaped my understanding of the relationship between Christian worldview and Bioethics because Christian worldview of nursing convicts us to care for individuals with the moral underpinning in God’s promise for humanity. Caring is a sanctified belief to look after the sick, poor, psychologically and physiologically challenged which in turn is serving God and his creation. If I am able to make decisions, it will be according to my Christian worldview regarding ethical decision making and my advance directive will also be that way.
