At what point in time does an engineer need to be involved in a project after the design is completed? How does an engineer know whether she or he needs to be involved?
The engineer should get involved in the project only if a violation of safety, related to engineering is found. In the ethics of Canon 3 specifically says that the “engineers, when serving as expert witnesses, shall express an engineering opinion only when it is founded upon adequate knowledge of the facts, upon a background of technical competence, and upon honest conviction.” Whenever there is an engineering violation the engineer needs to get involved. Their background knowledge can come in handy to help solve the problem and help the project be more safe for the public.
