Discussion posts should be 2 paragraphs (5- 8 sentences each ) and respond meaningful to 2 other students with either a question or discussion point. You should reference the reading and any source material you use (but do not just copy or quote).
2. Your topic: Analyzing art within historical and cultural contexts. Your exams will be written assignments that will require you to do this so this is a good opportunity to have a discussion about this and start you thinking about how to do historical and cultural analysis of art. Here is a link a helpful reading for this discussion section: https://valenciacollege.edu/west/arts-and-humanities/writing/historical-cultural.cfm (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)
You should also review relevant textbook readings/videos that address the historical context of art. Here is one good one: (https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/ap-art-history/introduction-ap-arthistory/v/goya-third-may (Links to an external site.)) Just make sure the example you choose is from Mespotamia (or the Ancient Near East as it is sometimes called.)
3. Once you have a good idea of what the topic is, go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s timeline and chose an art work. http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works/ (Links to an external site.) Important tip: Make sure the artwork is from the Ancient Near East (or Mespotamia as it is sometimes called.)
tip: don’t just post a description of an artwork — you need to directly show how it relates to the topic.
Based on your understanding of the artwork from what you can research on it, post an image or link and then describe how the artwork reflects its historical context. What values or political or religious ideas does it express about its culture? How does the art work do this? Important: Your post should define the topic and use an example without quoting or copying from source material.
Checkpoints for a good grade:
Your post is 2 paragraphs (each paragraph must be a minimum of 5 sentences.)
Your post directly references the assigned reading only (no googling the topic and copying what you find)
You respond to 2 other students with substantial feedback and a question.
You write clearly with appropriate tone and grammar.
