Scenarios
1. Physical Disabilities and Other Health Impairments
You learned today that a new student, Bob, will be coming to your third grade class at James Burd Elementary school. Bob was in a car accident six months ago and now has TBI with resulting cognitive functioning issues. He also uses a wheel chair for mobility. He needs to take pain medication every two hours; his medication has an effective range about ½ hour after he takes it that lasts for about 1 hour. Bob is also extremely allergic to peanuts; his allergic reaction causes his throat to constrict and breathing to be inhibited.
What are your first concerns or considerations for Bob?
What are secondary considerations?
Based on your understanding of Bob’s needs, what classroom procedures will you implement?
What instructional adaptations do you think might be necessary?
Would you change your answers if Bob a student at middle or HS?
2. Autism Spectrum Disorder
Next Monday, Mark will join your sixth grade class. Mark is a student with high functioning autism. You have learned that he often likes to tell others about the train system in the United States and other countries. Other students find his communication style odd and off-putting. Mark sometimes repeatedly rocks in his seat.
What classroom adaptations or procedures do you plan to implement for Mark?
Do you have any plan to talk with the other students about Mark before he arrives in class? If so, what will you say?
If Mark did not have Aspergers but instead had a more severe Autism and a lower IQ, what concerns would you have? What might you do differently?
Would you have different considerations if Mark was a HS student?
3. Visual Impairments
Sue will be a student in your 4th grade class. She has Retinitis Pigmentosa which is causing a severely narrowed visual field. She had normal vision up until the end of her kindergarten year. Sue is a quiet and shy student.
How will you arrange your classroom to optimize learning for Sue?
How will you adapt your 4th grade curriculum and procedures to accommodate Sue?
Do you think that she should be learning Braille?
Would you have different concerns if Sue was legally blind from birth?
What other considerations would you have if Sue was in HS?
4. Hearing Impairments
Its August 15, you just learned that Jessica will be joining your third grade class in a few weeks. Jessica is a uses ASL as her primary means of communication. Jessica’s parents are also Deaf and use ASL to communicate with each other and Jessica in the home. The school district has provided a sign language interpreter for your instruction time only. Jessica reads a little below grade level and writes at about the grade level of a first grader. Last year she had several behavioral outbursts.
What concerns do you have for Jessica and the standard curriculum for third grade?
Describe several adaptations that you plan for Jessica and your instruction.
If Jessica had residual hearing and did not use ASL, how would you alter your suggestions?
