Order Paper NowMazower, Mark. Hitler’s Empire: How the Nazis Ruled Europe. New York: Penguin Books, 2008.
Objective:
Students will read and assess Hitler’s Empire analyzing Mazower’s account of the Third Reich’s imperial administration of Europe and in particular the Nazis’ policy for Eastern Europe. In order to successfully write an analysis, students ought to consider certain points of interests such as:
-Mazower’s intention for the book as stated in his thesis/introduction.
-The background/contextual history that shaped National Socialist foreign policy in Europe. And whether this policy was well planned out or happened overnight.
-How the Third Reich redrew the map of Europe using the National Socialist apparatus and institutions to bring-in/exclude peoples.
-Any differences/significances in the Third Reich acting as an occupying force – such as in the West – versus an imperial conqueror in the East.
-How effective was the Third Reich in fulfilling its racial and foreign policy? Did the Nazis face resistance or collaboration from neighboring Europeans?
