Please realize that mental disorders typically exhibit symptoms that are on a continuum. Not all people who manifest symptoms can be diagnosed with a disorder, and among those that are diagnosed there are differing degrees of severity. The following are specific cases and are not necessarily the template for how symptoms will manifest in every case. Please be analytical, yet sensitive, in your responses. Use thoughtful analysis that is based on fact. Be aware that your fellow classmates may have personal experiences with these disorders.
Using information provided from all the assigned readings and the clips below, please address the following questions/points for at least 1) one of the obsessive compulsive clips, 2) one of the hoarding clips, and 3) one of the phobia clips. In other words, you will be addressing each point below for at least 3 clips in total.
- Discuss which of the models from Comer (e.g. biopsychosocial, cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, sociocultural, etc.) might best explain the etiology (underlying cause) of the disorders presented (i.e. one of the obsessive compulsive disorder clips, one of the hoarding clips, and one of the phobia clips).
- Discuss which of the specific therapies from Comer are most useful for designing effective treatment protocols for the disorders presented (i.e. one of the obsessive compulsive disorder clips, one of the hoarding clips, and one of the phobia clips).
